Ottinger Family's Purchase of ACCC

Strengthens Position on Golf Scene

If there was any doubt that the Ottinger family was a major force on the South Jersey golf scene, their position was solidified with the April 15 acquisition of Atlantic City Country Club, the state’s top public course, according to results of our 2013 Readers Choice poll and various golf publications.

The purchase of the venerable course, established in 1897, gives the Ottinger family three of the state’s top public tracks: Scotland Run in Williamstown, Ballamor, the former private club in Egg Harbor Township, and now Atlantic City Country Club, the historic track that was once considered one of the country’s most popular private tracks.

With the golf boom of the 1990s ancient history and many courses continuing to feel the strain of the ongoing public malaise over the U.S. economy, the Ottinger family has quietly become one of the dominant forces on the Garden State golf scene.

The acquisition of ACCC and the partnership created with Caesars Entertainment to promote the three tracks as “Official Golf Courses” for Caesars’ Total Reward Members in Pennsylvania and New Jersey provides a unique opportunity for golfers in the area to experience the unique qualities of these courses at a discounted rate. In return, the Ottinger Family Courses is promoting Caesars Hotel and Resorts in Atlantic City as “The Official Atlantic City Hotel Provider” for the three courses managed by the family. This arrangement is a win-win for both sides.

This latest news also clearly defines two major players in the regional public golf market: the Ottinger family and Ron Jaworski Golf. While the Ottingers have dramatically increased their share in the South Jersey golf market, Jaworski’s stable of courses has also grown with Running Deer, RiverWinds, Valleybrook and Blue Heron Pines all carrying the Jaworski Management brand. Likewise, Jaworski has created a unique membership opportunity for golfers to play any of his courses under one plan or at a reduced price.

For golfers in the tri-state area, the news about ACCC’s sale provides increased access to what is truly one of the country’s golf gems. For the golf purist, this is wonderful news.
